Backend Engineer

Responsibilities

• Design and implement robust backend systems using Java and/or Python to support extensive financial transactions for over a million users monthly.
• Ensure correctness over mere feature implementation by managing idempotency, retries, and concurrency to prevent financial discrepancies.
• Engage deeply with PostgreSQL and Redis by crafting efficient queries and adapting database schemas as required, going beyond basic ORM usage.
• Analyze production issues comprehensively by examining logs, metrics, and traces, ensuring a systematic approach to troubleshooting.
• Develop and maintain APIs that facilitate reliability for internal services and the AI agent, focusing on clear contracts and error handling.
• Take a proactive role in project development, playing a key part in the foundational aspects of our backend systems.
• Collaborate with senior engineers on complex challenges while independently managing less complicated incidents.
• Contribute to a fast-paced startup environment where learning and real ownership of projects are both encouraged and celebrated.

Requirements

• 1–4 years of experience developing backend services in Java, Python, or a similar programming language with proven production exposure.
• Strong understanding of database fundamentals, including SQL, indexing, and query performance, with proficiency in PostgreSQL.
• Knowledge of race conditions and the ability to address them effectively if encountered in production environments.
• Proficiency in reading logs and metrics for diagnosing issues rather than relying on guesswork.
• Commitment to writing robust code that functions correctly under concurrent operations and potential failures.
• Adaptability to a startup environment characterized by ambiguity, rapid iteration, and significant ownership.
• Exposure to the fintech sector, payments, or experiences within regulated domains is advantageous but not mandatory.
